General Electric delivers five locomotives to Cameroon

GENERAL Electric (GE) delivered five locomotives to Cameroon Railways (Camrail), a subsidiary of the Bolloré Group, in Douala on January 17.

Camrail has invested Central African Francs 12.3bn ($US 21.3m) in the locomotives, which are due to be commissioned in February, while the State of Cameroon has ordered an additional four locomotives which are due to be delivered in the coming months.

Agence Ecofin reports the 2.4MW locomotives are equipped with the “latest technology,” which 10 Camrail employees were trained to use by GE in the United States.

Cameroon’s investment in the four locomotives is part of the government’s plan to redevelop passenger operations in the West African country, which includes an order for 25 passenger coaches from French-Korean company CIM-SSRT, and five railcars to be delivered by Stadler.
